Heikki Mannila received his Ph.D. in computer science in 1985 from the University of Helsinki. He has been a professor of computer science at the University of Helsinki, a visiting professor in the Technical University of Vienna, a visiting researcher at Max Planck Institute in Saarbruecken, a senior researcher in Microsoft Research in Redmond, research fellow at Nokia Research in Finland, professor at Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University), and an academy professor. In 2009-2012 he was vice president for academic affairs and deputy president at Aalto University. In 2012 Heikki Mannila was appointed the president of the Academy of Finland. He was reappointed in 2017.
